    I. GRAMMAR: STUDENTS AND INSTRUCTOR WILL WORK TOGETHER IN ORDER TO LEARN HOW TO USE GRAMMAR PROPERLY. WE WILL DO MOST, IF NOT ALL, GRAMMAR IN THE CLASSROOM. MOST OF THE WORK WILL BE DONE ORALLY. WE WILL BE WORKING IN THE TEXTBOOK AND WITH WEB BASED TECHNOLOGY.

II. LITERATURE: CLASSES WILL BE SUBJECTED TO MANY NOVELS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. THE NOVELS WILL BE GEARED TOWARDS PREPARING YOUR CHILDREN FOR HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE LEVEL COURSES. TESTS WILL BE GIVEN IN ORDER TO DETERMINE COMPREHENSION. MOST OF THE TESTS WILL BE GIVEN ORALLY. AT THIS TIME, STUDENTS WILL NOT BE REQUIRED TO PURCHASE THE NOVELS. OF COURSE, IF YOUR CHILD PREFERS TO HAVE A COPY, YOU MAY PURCHASE THEM AT OUR LOCAL BOOKSTORES OR ONLINE.

III. WRITING: STUDENTS WILL BE EXPOSED TO THE WRITING PROCESS, THE FOUR MODES OF WRITING, AND HOW TO PROPERLY CONSTRUCT A PAPER. WE WILL ALSO BE DOING A RESEARCH PAPER AFTER CHRISTMAS. PLEASE DON'T PANIC... WE WILL DO EACH STEP TOGETHER IN CLASS. EACH SECTION WILL BE BASED ON 100 POINTS. THIS WILL BE A MAJOR WRITING PROJECT FOR THE SECOND SEMESTER. RESEARCH PAPERS ARE NORMALLY DUE BY MID FEB.

IV. VOCABULARY: IT IS IMPERATIVE TO HAVE A STRONG VERNACULAR. THERE WILL BE A VOCABULARY TEST EVERY WEEK UNLESS THE INSTRUCTOR CHOOSES TO SKIP A WEEK. STUDENTS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR KNOWING THE DEFINITIONS AND SPELLING THE WORDS CORRECTLY. THERE WILL BE 10 WORDS PER WEEK (5 POINTS FOR THE DEFINITION AND 5 POINTS FOR SPELLING).

    V. GRADING PROCEDURE: MOST GRADES ARE BASED ON A 100 POINT SCALE.

VI. HOMEWORK: MY GOAL IS TO COMPLETE SCHOOL WORK AT SCHOOL. WITH THAT BEING SAID, STUDENTS WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR STUDYING FOR VOCABULARY TESTS AND COMPLETE CLASSWORK/HOMEWORK BY THE DUE DATE. IT IS THE SOLE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE STUDENT TO MAKE SURE HIS OR HER WORK IS TURNED IN BY THE DUE DATE. A DUE DATE WILL BE DETERMINED WHEN AN ASSIGNMENT IS ASSIGNED.

VII. ALL CLASSES WILL BE UTILIZING GOOGLE CLASSROOM. MOST ASSESSMENTS AND WRITINGS WILL BE ASSIGNED VIA GOOGLE CLASSROOM. ALL STUDENTS HAVE BEEN ASSIGNED A SECURE EMAIL VIA THE ETOWAH COUNTY BOARD OF EDUCATION.  THE INSTRUCTOR WILL COMMUNICATE VIA EMAIL WITH STUDENTS/PARENTS CONCERNING ASSIGNMENTS. THIS IS AN AWESOME TOOL THAT I AM USING IN MY 21ST CENTURY CLASSROOM. STUDENTS WILL ALSO BE UTILIZING GOOGLE DOCS TO COMPLETE THEIR ASSIGNMENTS.

VIII. EXPLORATORY CLASS (4TH PERIOD): DEVICES WILL ULTIMATELY BE AT THE DISCRETION OF THE INSTRUCTOR! THE SCHEDULE FOR EXPLORATORY IS AS FOLLOWS:

    A. COME IN AND PREPARE TO GO TO LUNCH
    B. RETURN FROM LUNCH AND READ FROM A BOOK OR MAGAZINE. WE WILL BE READING INFORMATIONAL TEXT FOR APPROXIMATELY 25-30 MINUTES EACH DAY. ALL STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO BRING SOMETHING THEY LIKE TO READ EVERY DAY! THIS WILL BE COUNTED AS THEIR EXPLORATORY GRADE. THE LAST HALF OF THE CLASS WILL BE DEDICATED TO A STUDY HALL (NOT A TALKING CLASS OR DEVICE USING CLASS UNLESS NOTED BY THE INSTRUCTOR). THIS ALLOWS STUDENTS TIME TO STUDY FOR TESTS, COMPLETE MISSED ASSIGNMENTS, OR WORK ON CURRENT ASSIGNMENTS. THERE WILL BE TIMES THAT WE UTILIZE THE COMPUTER LAB DURING EXPLORATORY WHEN IT IS AVAILABLE.

    C. THE RULES FOR THIS CLASS WILL BE STRICTLY ENFORCED. FOR ANY INFRACTIONS, PARENTS WILL BE NOTIFIED IMMEDIATELY AS WELL AS THE ADMINISTRATION.  I WANT THIS TIME TO BE EDUCATIONAL AND CONSTRUCTIVE.

    D. CELL PHONES/DEVICES: THERE WILL BE A SIGN ON MY DOOR DAILY THAT TELLS THE STUDENTS IF THEY NEED TO BRING THEIR DEVICES. DEVICES WILL NOT BE PERMITTED THE MAJORITY OF THE TIME FOR EXPLORATORY CLASS. THE SIGNS ARE AS FOLLOWS:

RED: "LOCK IT": NO DEVICES ALLOWED IN THE CLASSROOM. IF A STUDENT CHOOSES TO NOT FOLLOW THIS RULE, THEIR DEVICE WILL BE CONFISCATED AND GIVEN TO THE ADMINISTRATION. THIS WILL HAPPEN EACH TIME THE INFRACTION OCCURS. PARENTS MUST COME TO THE SCHOOL IN ORDER TO GET THEIR CHILD'S DEVICE.

YELLOW: "DOCK IT": STUDENTS ARE TO BE PREPARED TO USE THEIR DEVICES AT SOME POINT DURING THE CLASS. THE DEVICE MUST BE "DOCKED" ON THE TOP OF THEIR DESK. DEVICES ARE TO BE  POWERED DOWN (NOT SILENCED) UNTIL THE INSTRUCTOR GIVES HIS PERMISSION TO USE IT.

GREEN: "ROCK IT": STUDENTS WILL BE USING THEIR DEVICES IN CLASS.

**THIS POLICY IS FOR ALL CLASSES: ACADEMIC AND EXPLORATORY**
