Writing Contest Information

Who: 6th, 7th, and 8th-grade students at RMS

What: a contest where you get to express your creativity through writing

When: all entries are due to your English teacher by Thursday, February 4

Contest Categories

  1. Drama- Judging will be based on the elements of fiction (characterization, plot, setting, theme, etc.) and on the ease of difficulty in staging the work, with more weight given to those plays that could be easily staged.  Another consideration of judging will be performance time.  The minimum time is five minutes and the maximum is ten to twelve minutes. These works may have several scenes but only one act.

  2. Nonfiction- The paragraph/essay should be the student’s ideas on any appropriate subject rather than a summary of material found in reference books.  You may enter a well-written paragraph using sentence structure, vocabulary, syntax, etc appropriate for your grade. You may choose to enter a composition consisting of two or more paragraphs.

  3. Fiction- These entries should be short stories. These entries MUST NOT be illustrated. This category is judged on how well you write your story rather than visual impressions.

  4. Illustrated Story- The illustrated story may be bound using construction paper or covered cardboard.  Cartoon illustrations are permissible for secondary entries.

  5. Poetry- The poems may be rhyme, blank verse, limerick, or cinquain, but care should be taken to ensure that each poem is original and not borrowed.

  6. Webpage- The webpage (blogs, glogs, prezi, wikis, etc) must use correct grammar and spelling.  The writing must be strong, showing a thorough understanding of the topic.  Students should select and insert links, graphics, and multimedia when appropriate to enhance the content and further thinking and engage potential viewers.

Please make sure that all entries are printed and turned in to your  English teacher by Thursday, February 4.

For website entries, you may print the link to your website and turn it in.
